On the auspicious occasion of the 22nd Anniversary of AKGsOVIHAMS, we would like to express our gratitude to all the founding members, doctors, staff and well-wishers for their support and efforts in serving the humanity. Om-Vidya Institute of Homoeopathy and Allied Medical Sciences (OVIHAMS) is the brainchild of internationally renowned Homoeopathic physician Dr. A. K. Gupta, MD (Hom.) who has been a strong proponent of “Integrated Approach to Medical Services” for the welfare of patients. The concept of OVIHAMS, at the time of its inception in 1999, was well-appreciated by the then Health Minister of State which eventually led to the formation of the AYUSH Ministry as well. Over the years, Dr. Gupta has strongly voiced his support for the holistic approach to medical care as he firmly believes that every system of medicine has something to offer with its strengths and limitations, and an integrated approach can provide the best treatment options for patients’ treatment and recovery. Long before it was proposed in the parliament, Dr. Gupta had been pushing for common syllabus in medical colleges. This would ensure that the budding doctors come into the mainstream well-versed with different treatment options and thus can take an informed decision about the treatment approach best suited for a particular case. It is only through inclusion that the all resources can be best utilised to their fullest potential; exclusion only leads to ugly power dynamics and compartmentalisation at the cost of patients’ welfare. At AKGsOVIHAMS, patients were also given a “Medical ID card” which carried their basic medical information which can be extremely vital in times of emergencies. Similar concept has now been adopted by the Ministry of Health, Govt. of India as they intend to provide similar medical cards to all citizens of India. Today, Dr. Gupta feels happy to see some of his ideas taking shape at the national level and is hopeful that the present and future generations of doctors would take pride in serving the humanity with sincerity, inclusivity and a patient-first approach rather than resorting to infighting about which system of medicine is superior.
