AMOEBIASIS
A type of gastro, is a cause of diarrhoea among travellers . It is caused by a parasite known as Entamoeba histolytica ( Ent.Histolytica) that infects the bowel. Amoebiasis most commonly affects young to middle-aged adults. Proper handwashing helps prevent the spread of amoebiasis.
It is a parasitic infection of the colon with the amoeba Entamoeba histolytica.

- caused by the amoeba Entamoeba Histolytica.
- A person suffers from amoebic dysentery when he takes in food and water contaminated with cysts of the amoeba
- fever
- chills
- nausea
- weight loss
- abdominal discomfort
- Diarrhoea which may include blood or mucus with periods of constipation
Symptomatic amoebiasis can be treated with administration of metronidazole, followed by eliminating any organisms present in the colon by a luminal amoebicide.
Asymptomatic carriers are treated by giving a luminal amebicide. This reduces the risk of transmission.
Amoebic dysentery can be treated by both Allopathic and Homoeopathic treatment. The infection is usually cleared within 13-14 days upto 4 weeks. The elimination of the amoebic cysts from the intestine is necessary to prevent recurrence.
- Stool Examination under microscope to detect the cysts in stool
- CBC with ESR
