Peptic Ulcers

Peptic ulcer disease refers to ulceration (sores) in the lining of the upper portion of the digestive tract such as the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, etc. Depending upon where these ulcers are located they are designated with various names such as gastric ulcers or duodenal ulcers. Our stomach normally produces an acid (hydrochloric acid/HCl), which is essential for the proper digestion of food. The digestive tract has some natural barriers to protect itself from the corrosive effects of acids.
