If the walls of the vein become stretched and less flexible (elastic), the valves may get weaker. A weakened valve can allow blood to leak backward and eventually flow in the opposite direction. When this occurs, blood can accumulate in the vein(s), which then become enlarged and swollen. The risk factors include: -
• Menopause
• Pregnancy
• Being aged over 50
• Standing for long periods
• Family history of varicose veins
• Obesity
• Taking birth control pills

• veins look blue or dark purple, twisted, swollen, and lumpy (bulging)
• aching in legs with legs feeling heavy, especially after exercise or at night
• a minor injury to the affected area may result in longer bleeding or even end up into an ulcer
• fat under the skin just above the ankle can become hard, resulting in the skin shrinking
• swollen ankles
• skin in the affected area is red, dry, and itchy (venous eczema)
• leg cramps on suddenly standing up
• restless leg syndrome
• irregular whitish patches that look like scars appear at the ankles

• Exercise regularly and lose weight • raising the legs while sitting • avoiding prolonged standing or sitting • wear compression stockings

Varicose veins are seen very commonly among patients who have long standing jobs. There can be various factors leading up to the tortuosity and fullness of veins. The pain, heaviness and swelling in the lower limbs and extremities becomes difficult to bear for the suffering patient. Not always do we talk about an ideal cure in case of varicose veins because once a valve fails, it is not possible to reverse it back to its normal state. Instead, the focus is more on preventing further damage and enhancing the collateral repair of the venous tissue. The treatment and prognosis of the case of varicose veins depends on the severity and chronicity of the problem.
Be it any mode of treatment, management is of prime importance to achieve desirable results for a patient suffering from varicose veins. One must not stand for long, one must sit with raised legs and not hanging them down. One should wear compression stockings as the provide the necessary pressure to the veins which send the blood back to the veins and hence avoid any accumulation of blood and also helps in repair of the veins by preventing the venous tortuosity.
Usually the patient suffering from varicose veins goes to a doctor when he/she starts suffering from the complications of the tortuous veins. Complaints like itching, ulceration, heaviness and swelling in the feet are the ones that a Doctor has to eventually treat. These are actually the more important medical conditions to treat and manage.
Homoeopathy has a wonderful role to play in the complete resolution of venous ulcers and other complications. If the patient follows the dos and don’ts, then there is absolutely no question of not recovering from the traumatic and painful suffering of varicose ulcers. The pain, the itching, the constant infection can all be completely cured with powerful Homoeopathic medicines.
Varicose veins are usually seen to run in family members. If proper precautions are taken along with well selected constitutional Homoeopathic similimum, then the occurrence of varicose veins can definitely be prevented or delayed for long with minimum suffering.
Homoeopathic medicines like Arnica, Arsenic Alb, Lachesis, Hamamelis, Vipera, Belladonna, Phosphorus, Sulphur, etc. are extremely useful in the treatment of varicose veins and its complications.
